should i let my daughter (recovering from anorexia) watch ’10 things you need to know about losing weight’?

It could have some useful real information about healthy eating…?
Or is this a mistake?
She would really like to watch it.

This is the programme description:

‘Medical journalist Michael Mosley looks at the latest scientific breakthroughs in slimming, testing out the tips himself in an effort to shed a couple of pounds. The programme investigates the benefits of eating soup, the brain’s response to skipping meals, how low-fat dairy products contribute to weight loss and the best foods to eat to stave off hunger pangs’

Is she slim or overweight right now? If she’s thin, I would pass on that video as she might get some ideas flowing in her head that losing weight is good no matter what and she might re-attempt to do so. I would replace that video with a book or video concerning healthy eating habits and not weight loss. But if she is overweight then by all means yes let her watch it.

only if you watch it with her so you can talk about it together. it might be good, but it might backfire.

    hey!
    I am a recovering anorexic..
and i wudnt watch things like that cuz it cud triggar it all off agen. but sometimes anorexics that are getting better watch it to make them selves feel better in some sort of way like they cud watch it and follow it at least they are eating.

But if u think that it is goin to make her go back down hill then please dont let her watch it. you need to be soo supportive with wats she does and understand her way of getting better.

email me if u need to talk

I would ask her why she wants to watch that particular program.

The program itself is fine though. It presents a healthy diet plan, frowns on attempting to starve oneself to lose weight, and certainly does not promote any kind of eating disorder.

If you allow her to watch it, I would suggest watching it with her, and see what she is getting out of the program.

Good luck to you and your daughter!

I’m not sure I would let her… but rather than say not and take control away form her get a dvd or something and distract her.

I was hospitalised with anorexia in my teens; and whilst recovering I watched a show about weight loss and it triggered the ‘competitive’ side of me, and I relapsed!

I had it again in my twenties and was threatened with having my son taken away from me.

I managed to get a degree in nutrition a few years back… and again it brought my eating habits back into clear focus; at the moment I am too heavy due to meds for bipolar… and have begun losing weight by… starving myself again.

Fat, thin or healthy weight the eating disorder is always there; it just needs a trigger!

And the show is about losing weight,,,, it will make her remember how in control she was then.

Believe me your daughter knows all about healthy eating… it has been her life for years. I may be wrong and she may watch it with no difficulty, but be warned that it could be a trigger.

  9. Your Reality Check Bounced says:

She needs to stop obsessing about weight loss period. Watching something on just that topic is not going to help her train her mind to stay focused on other things. Are you pushing her to stay thin?

  10. xaxorm says:

I think she needs to see examples of physically strong, well-built women who are still extremely fit, like that Warrior Princess, swimmers, soccer players, etc. The emphasis should be on putting on weight in the right places, not taking any more off. Muscle vs. fat.

  11. CC says:

she might get a good idea on how unhealthy her dieting (in fact anorexia) was. she may get to understand that even the most severe diets involve more eating than she finally got to do…
idk… you could watch it together and have a talk afterwards to make sure she’s ok.

I’m anorexic and in recovery, and I think that you should allow her to watch it, but insist on watching it with her, so that you can have discussions about what is talked about and you can shut off the program if you think it encourages unhealthy weight loss. Watching the program with her might start some really good conversations, and you could talk to her about what she thinks about recent diet methods, and how she feels about what is being said on the program, and what she thinks is healthy, etc. I think that if you allow her to watch it, and watch with her, it could be beneficial for both of you.
